Why Food Explorers May Be the Class Your Child Needs
A Sensory-Based Food Experience for Ages 2–5
Tuesdays | Sept. 16 – Oct. 21 | 12:00–12:45 PM
We are excited to introduce Food Explorers, a unique, play-based class created for children ages 2–5 who experience challenges with eating, food exploration, or sensory sensitivities.
Whether mealtimes are a daily struggle, or your child avoids certain textures, smells, or messy play, Food Explorers offers a gentle, supportive way to build confidence and comfort around food.
What Is Food Explorers?
Food Explorers is a 6-week class co-designed by Development Therapy’s pediatric occupational therapist, in partnership with Happy Place Cooking Space. This program uses food as a playful tool to help children explore new textures, smells, and routines in a way that feels safe and engaging with no pressure to eat involved.
Each session features hands-on activities that gently encourage exploration of a variety of textures and smells, all within a calm, supportive group setting.
Who Is a Good Fit?
This class is perfect for children who:
-
Are picky or selective eaters
-
Show strong reactions to new or unfamiliar foods
-
Resist messy or tactile play
-
Struggle with mealtime anxiety or food refusal
-
Would benefit from sensory-based strategies in a low-pressure setting
We understand that every child is different this class meets each child at their individual level of readiness. Some children may simply smell or touch a new food, while others might begin to interact more directly over time. All progress is celebrated.
What Will Your Child Gain?
Through creative food-based play and guided activities, children will:
-
Build tolerance and interest in a variety of foods
-
Develop social confidence by participating in a small, supportive group
-
Gain exposure in a way that feels safe, predictable, and enjoyable
These are the foundational skills that not only help with eating but also carry over into everyday routines.
